Rainbow Archive and Historical Society preserves the past for future generations
Originally formed after the local Masonic Lodge folded, allowing the building to become available, the society's roots trace back even further to the informal research efforts of Dawn Petschel and Marj Wallis, who were dedicated to documenting the area's history.

Over the years, the society has amassed a vast collection of local history, including photographs, videos, posters, documents, newspapers, clothing, awards, trophies, and much more.
This extensive collection requires careful cataloguing and preservation, a task made even more important by the need to digitise valuable historical documents.
With the purchase of a new A3 scanner, funded by a Community Action Grant from the Hindmarsh Shire Council, the society is now able to begin scanning and digitising the Rainbow Jeparit Argus newspapers.
While issues from 1906 to 1948 have already been digitised, the papers from 1948 to the present day still require attention. This scanning process is crucial in preserving these historical documents for future generations.
The work of the society doesn’t stop at digitisation. The team also faces the ongoing task of cataloguing new items, tidying up and polishing awards and trophies, and updating display cases. These are all plans they hope to tackle in the forthcoming year.
The Rainbow Archive and Historical Society plays a vital role in preserving the community's heritage. Historical societies like this one are dedicated to researching, collecting, and interpreting historical materials to help future generations better understand their past. They serve to protect and share knowledge of history through significant items that tell the story of a community.
The society is run by a dedicated committee, including President Jan Edelsten, Vice President Mal Drendel, Secretary/Treasurer Ruth Gosling, and committee members Diane Wall, Peter Ralph, Col Frew, Don Pedder, Allira Roberts, Josh Whiteman, and Jill Eckermann. The committee holds monthly meetings, and membership is available for just $10 annually.
New members are always welcome, especially those with expertise in technology, filing, and cataloguing.
To help support the society’s efforts, they hold an annual fundraising raffle, and monetary donations are always appreciated. These funds help purchase essential archival materials such as garment boxes and A3 document storage.
For those interested in learning more about the Rainbow Archive and Historical Society, or perhaps contributing to its important work, they are encouraged to reach out via their Facebook page or contact a committee member directly.
A visit to the archive offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing an opportunity to step back in time and explore the history of Rainbow.
