Murtoa’s ‘Cathedral of the Wimmera’, The Stick Shed, has re-opened its visitor information and amenities building following refurbishment works.
The old information and visitor building has had a massive facelift to meet the demand of a growing number of visitors to this iconic former grain store heritage building.
As a major Murtoa tourist attraction, the iconic Stick Shed last year drew 23,000 people to visit.
The building’s interior has been extensively remodelled and new women’s and men’s toilets have been added, as well as a fully accessible disabled toilet.
The exterior of the building has been re-clad and a gable roof has been built over the entire building, extending the area and making a welcoming outdoor staging area for visitors.
Inside the upgraded building there was a display and information area, offices and an audio visual room, president of The Stick Shed committee of management, Sally Taylor, said.
”The upgraded facility will greatly improve the experience for casual visitors and tour groups as well as provide much improved working conditions for our staff,” Ms Taylor said.
“I would like to thank our staff for putting up with and working in temporary facilities for the period of the refurbishment.”
Ms Taylor also thanked Yarriambiack Shire Council for its support and project management of the upgrade.
The work was made possible by $350,000 from Development Victoria, $89,000 from the federal government’s Heritage Fund and $36,000 from the structure’s own committee of management.
