One of the highlights will be the Show Steers Program - a hands-on experience that showcases what practical agricultural training is all about.

In this program, students take full responsibility for preparing cattle for competition at the Royal Melbourne Show.

It involves feeding, washing, grooming and halter breaking - the full process from paddock to presentation.

It’s practical, immersive and grounded in real industry expectations, giving students a genuine taste of what working with livestock is like day-to-day.

Importantly, it’s not just about getting a steer ready for the show ring.

The program helps build confidence, teamwork, accountability and a strong understanding of animal welfare.

Students learn to work together, manage their time and take pride in the progress they make - skills that stay with them well beyond their time at Longerenong College.

By the time of August 9 comes around, both students and steers have made significant progress, and that’s where Open Day becomes something special.

Visitors can see that development firsthand - getting up close to the cattle, watching students in action, and talking with staff and students about what’s involved.

Whether you’re considering study, connected to the industry, or simply interested in agriculture, it’s a great chance to see skilled, hands-on learning in action.

August 9 is the date - come along and experience what Longy is all about.
