Sloth storytime brings fun to library

Hopetoun children embraced their inner sloth during a special Science Week storytime hosted by Yarriambiack Libraries’ representative Stacey Drage.

Seventeen participants, including local kindergarten children, joined the session funded by the Royal Society of Victoria.

Ms Drage read “The Speedy Sloth” by Rebecca Young before leading activities exploring sloth characteristics and behaviour.

“We were animal scientists and we explored sloths,” she said.

Children tried lying on their backs with arms and legs in the air to “replicate hanging from a tree,” before taking part in a slow-motion race to match sloth speed.

“We had the kids join me, reading a book and exploring sloths,” Ms Drage said.

“Children appeared to enjoy it, as they were engaging.”

The craft activity proved just as popular, with each child making a sloth magnet to hang on the fridge at home.

The Yarriambiack Libraries engagement bus visits Hopetoun and District Neighbourhood House every fortnight on Thursdays to engage with the community regarding their needs and concerns.

“I’m quite happy to talk to anybody about their library and customer service needs,” she said.
