Snow White with a steampunk twist

Originally a Brothers Grimm fairytale, the story of Snow White has been told and retold many times over the centuries.

This year Horsham College students are giving it a steampunk twist in a pantomime-style performance of the family classic with lots of colour, fun, interaction and of course music.

In preparing for this show, students have had their shortest rehearsal period in more than 12 years - even less than last year.

However, with support from school, the production committee and surrounding community organisations such as Ararat Regional Theatre Society and Horsham Arts Council, students are looking sensational among some funky sets.

Students who select Year 8 theatre studies or "Sketchy As" as subjects have the chance to plan, design and create sets and costumes for a different production every year.

"Students are proud of what they create and are excited to share information with those around them about the role they played, pointing and telling their teachers and classmates 'I did that'," show director Emily Friedrichsen said.

For Snow White, the Year 9 Sketchy As class has designed a steampunk hat for each character in the show, drawing inspiration in part from last year's hugely successful Wimmera Steampunk Festival in Dimboola.

More than 50 students are involved in the cast and crew of this year's school production, ranging from Year 7 to Year 12.

Some veterans are returning for their final year while many are gracing the stage for the first time.

Year 10 student Henry Overman joined the crew last year and had so much fun that he has decided to have a crack on stage this time.

In fact, after Henry gave a sensational audition he has been welcomed as this year's leading man.

Students are working very hard to learn their lines and practise across two or three rehearsals a week after school and a few all-day rehearsals before the end of term.

Only three public shows will be given, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday August 15-17, at 7.30pm.
