The initiative, led by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits regular walking, or alternative active transport to and from school, can provide for long-term wellbeing.

Dimboola Primary School students came together at Dimboola Recreation Reserve where they were accompanied by teachers, education support staff and local police officers.

After arriving at the school, a brief talk was given by the police on how to travel safely to school.

A key message that came through was how families should consider parking on the side nearest to the school, avoiding the need to cross the road.

The police also indicated that they would continue to patrol around the school, observing behaviour of road users and reminding people where necessary of the appropriate rules to follow.

To mark the occassion, students were treated to a pizza lunch, funded by the Hindmarsh Shire, which was followed by sporting activities run by the junior school council.

Pedestrian Council of Australia CEO Harold Scruby said children under 10 must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.

“The best form of physical activity for all Australians is walking regularly," he said.

"Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day.

"We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at end of their day."
