Substance safety check

Music-lovers heading to Beyond The Valley near Ballarat between Christmas and New Year will have the chance to be part of the state government's new pill-testing trial.

Beyond The Valley, to be held from December 28 until January 1 at Hesse, will enable festival-goers to have pills, capsules, powders, crystals and liquids tested to identify harmful chemicals that could cause or contribute to death.

The service will be staffed by experts who will not only analyse substances but also provide confidential health information on making better, safer decisions.

It will be the first of 10 festivals participating in the trial.
