The Mallee's history of honours and achievements

Australians regularly turn to Google to learn about national honours recipients, with Google Trends data revealing recurring spikes in searches around major honours announcements.

In the past five years, search interest in 'birthday honours' reached its highest relative level during the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours, when the likes of Ash Barty and Shane Warne were among the recipients recognised for their distinguished services.

Additional peaks occur in June each year, coinciding with the annual King's Birthday honours announcements, previously known as the Queen's Birthday honours.

While prominent Australians often attract national attention during these announcements, locals also attract the spotlight for their contributions to our community.

Among them are Hopetoun volunteer Olive Wellington, who received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2020, and Yaapeet historian Claire White, who was honoured with an OAM in 2021.

One particularly notable local is former resident Heather Mitchell.

Mrs Mitchell was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1980 and a Member of the Order of Australia in 1991.

She was the first female leader of the Victorian Farmers Federation in 1986 and helped establish Landcare in Victoria alongside Joan Kirner.

Mrs Mitchell lived in Hopetoun from 1941 until she and her husband moved to Horsham in the 1980s.

The Order of Australia was established in 1975 "by letters patent of Queen Elizabeth II" following advice from then-prime minister Gough Whitlam.

Before the Australian honours system, Australians could receive honours under the British Imperial system.

Other recipients of birthday honours from the Hopetoun region include Keith Dodgshun MLA for Ouyen (1939-1952), Dr ADJ Stoutjesdijk OBE (1954-1991), Lester Mitchell MBE (1970), Vera Molnar MBE (1970), Bert Hilton MBE (circa 1970’s), Agnes Hilton MBE (circa 1970’s), and Horace Walter Gould MBE (1974).
