Top entertainment for Australia Day

Organisers of the annual Australia Day event in Warracknabeal, the local Rotary Club, are pleased to have secured some fabulous local entertainers for the community event on Friday 26 January, 2024.

Starting from 8am with a free cooked breakfast under the vines at the Warracknabeal Racecourse, the Warracknabeal Band will entertain the crowd.

The band has grown from strength to strength in recent years and, under the direction of Jason Wright, boasts a popular repertoire of songs performed by our local talented musicians, aged from around 10 years old to 90.

To open the formal program, the National Anthem will be sung by the local Guides, Scouts, Cubs and Joeys immediately after their Flag Parade, and during the program, popular well-known musician Jeff Woodward will perform some of his songs.

Jeff was born and bred in Brim East, but has travelled across Australia as a solo guitarist and fronting a number of successful bands.

He played around Tasmania and Melbourne with hard rock/blues trio “Hideaway” - featuring well-known Tasmanian drummer Fred Spiteri (Stevie Wright Band/Billy Thorpe) and Melbourne bass player Roy Zedras (Ross Ryan Band).

Jeff relocated to the Northern Territory and performed weekly with Katherine band “Indecision”, and duo “Free Falling”.

In early 2015, he returned to the Wimmera area to continue performing solo gigs in the local region and across Victoria, and often teams up with another great local, Darryn Wardle.

Jeff presents a wide range of musical styles and influences, drawing from his years of live experience to provide an entertaining mix of blues, folk and classic rock – adapting to the venue/crowd wishes.

We look forward to seeing what Jeff has in store for our Australia Day audience in January.

Come along and find out!

A main feature of the event is the awarding of our local Australia Day awards - the Citizen of the Year, The Young Achiever of the Year and the Sportsperson of the Year.

The Rotary Club don’t submit the nominationsn - they must come from locals - so we are encouraging everyone to take the time to consider who are our locals that contribute significantly to our wider community and the high achievers, especially in sport.

There are nomination forms in many local businesses and shops, at the Shire Office, the Warracknabeal Library, on the Warracknabeal Rotary Club Facebook page and Warracknabeal Rotary Club website.

Nominations close on Wednesday December 13.

Please contact Rotarian Wendy Hewitt with any queries. We hope you can support us with some nominations.

Another highlight of the event will be a presentation by another past resident who will be confirmed soon - more details will be printed in future Herald, so stay tuned!
