Tractor safety alert for towing on steep slopes
WorkSafe has issued a reminder to farmers about the importance of managing the risks of tractors towing on steep slopes following an on-farm death in September 2024.
The worker was towing a large spray trailer when they lost control while descending a steep slope in an orchard, killing the driver.
WorkSafe pointed out safety issues in the incident, including using high range when operating and towing a load and the tractor's roll-over protective structure (ROPS) having been removed.
The ROPS was removed to allow access between rows of trees in the orchard; however, the vehicle was operating in an unobstructed access path and should have had the ROPS secured in the 'up' position.
Tractors should be in low-range gears when moving up or down steep slopes to reduce the likelihood of runaway down the slope.
This is important when towing a heavy load, such as a full spray tank, in order to increase the driver's control of the speed to descend or ascend the incline safely.
Risks in spraying can be reduced by planning so the spray tank is not full when starting downhill, and assessing the incline to make sure it is safe to descend or ascend, which may include considering the slope gradient, surface material, evenness of terrain, weight of load and tractor capacity.
Drivers are advised to always use low range gears, ensure the tractor is fitted with a ROPS and make sure all seatbelts are in good working condition.
