Unexplained fires lit over fire season
A series of unexplained fires have been lit across town during the fire season with local police still investigating some incidents.
February 27 saw police attend a fire that was on the creek line at the end of Cemetery Road, Warracknabeal.
Sgt Newell said it burnt a large area, with the cause still unknown.
Another incident was on April 10 where police were called to the Creekside Hotel carpark and found a small amount of leaves and twigs had been set alight near a picnic table.
Sgt Newell said when she arrived, it was out, and CFA was not called.
"I spoke to some kids in the street at the time and still have to follow up some enquiries," she said.
Most recently was Saturday, May 3, at around 9.15am, CFA responded to four fires along the creek line at the end of Tarrant Road, Warracknabeal.
Each fire burnt an area of around 4x4 metres, with one of the fires starting from grass stuffed into an old power pole before being lit.
The cause of all four fires is still unknown.
During December, emergency services encountered two unexplained fires, with one in Brim and another on Goads Road, Warracknabeal, which involved farmland being burnt.
Sgt Newell said there have also been other instances with backyard fires where people have been burning rubbish during the fire ban period.
She encouraged anyone who witnessed any of these or similar incidents to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or, if immediate attention is required, to call Triple Zero.
“Despite the fire ban period being over, we are still at risk of serious fires due to the dryness of the area, so please be vigilant still and report any suspicious activity," she said.
