Works on Werrigar Street from the Campbell Street intersection towards Yarriambiack Creek are starting, with premliminary works due to take place this week.
Yarriambiack Shire Council manager of infrastructure and works Joel Turner said the street would undergo a five-metre widening.
New kerb, channel, a new footpath and more carparks will be added.
"There will be traffic control and parking restrictions once it all starts but we're hoping for minimal impact on traffic," Mr Turner said.
Yarriambiack Shire Council CEO Tammy Smith said the upgrade would minimise traffic congestion and make the thoroughfare safer around the education precinct.
The works will take about four weeks to complete, subject to contractor availability.
Updates regarding the works will be posted in the council's weekly Yarri Yarns Newsletter and on its Facebook page.
Updates will also be shared in school newsletters.
