Veteran farmer reflects on 45 years at WMFD
For almost 50 years, Jeff McLoughlan has watched the Machinery Field Days grow from a small event into a significant showcase.

Every year, the Charlton farmer explores the latest machinery, engages with dealers, and sees firsthand how agricultural technology has evolved.
“I’ve watched this event expand, and now it takes at least two days to see everything,” he said.
“It attracts farmers, their families, and the entire rural community.”
Mr McLoughlan started farming in 1972, focusing on lentils, canola, wheat, barley and beans.
He looks for improvements in cropping and grain-handling machines, asking dealers questions and learning about the newest developments in farming technology.
“The machinery keeps getting bigger as farms expand,” he said.
“Sprayers have become more automated and efficient, making farming more productive.”
Mr McLoughlan has purchased several pieces of equipment at the Field Days, including slashers and medium-sized machinery.
He values seeing the products up close before deciding on a purchase.
Sometimes, he buys on the spot; other times, he goes home to think about it before making a deal.
This year, he especially enjoyed the large tractor display, where he reflected on the older models he once used on his farm.
“It’s not just about machinery,” he said.
“There’s something for everyone, from farming equipment to services and special-interest exhibits.”
