Weir eyes American competition

It'll be a nervous wait for local Crossfit Games hopeful Lilly Weir, as she anticipates the results of a competition last Sunday that could see her competing in America.

The final hurdle before being America-bound, Weir said the competition went well, and initial placings indicate she finished 18th, with the first 30 in her age group moving to the next round.

"Although, the leaderboard will not be finalised until April 22 as movement and placings can change, so fingers crossed and we will know the final leaderboard in a couple of weeks," she said.

Weir was drawn to CrossFit in 2022 when it opened in Horsham.

"I didn’t know what it was at the beginning," the 17-year-old admits.

"I walked past on the open day and got welcomed by Ravi, one of the coaches, then went back a week later to do the week trial with my sister, and from there, I absolutely fell in love with it."

Now, it's a big part of her life, with Weir training six days a week, usually a couple of times a day, with a rest on Sunday, and active recovery on Thursday.

Weir thrives on the challenge and thrill CrossFit brings, and her desire to do better.

"There is always a challenge to work towards and skills to get better at," she said.

"I love the community and people and how everyone is so supportive, always watching my qualifier workouts and cheering me on.

"I’m honestly so appreciative of everyone there."

To progress to round two, Weir banked a result of fifth in the world in the female's 16 to 17 age group.

"This was online and we did one workout every week for three weeks and submitted our results," she explained.

"The next stage (held recently) was the semifinals, where the top two percent (around 200) people from the open, compete online against each other.

"We have to video and submit our workouts and from there, the top 30 go to the CrossFit games in America - Columbus, Ohio, at the end of August."

She said her focus is primarily on making the event, and that it would be cool to go to the States and compete against the best competitors in her age group.

But longer term, she has a bigger goal.

"In the future, I am aspiring to make the semifinals for the individual women at the Torian Pro," she said.

"A lot of training will have to be done to get there, but I am eager and excited for more."
