Wimmera's rising stars ready to Rebel

The Wimmera is once again proving itself a powerhouse of emerging football talent, a strong contingent of local female players having earned selection in the 2026 GWV Rebels girls' under 18 squad.
AFL region manager for the Wimmera Mallee, Angela Ballinger, said these selections – drawn from the Wimmera and Horsham District football netball leagues – highlighted both the depth of skill in the region and the strength of its development pathways.
"Leading the charge is an exciting mix of proven performers and key-position 'talls' set to make a significant impact this season," Ballinger said.
"Among the standout inclusions is Lara Purchase of Nhill Tigers and Laharum, whose leadership, consistency and on-field presence have made her a cornerstone of the squad.
"Widely respected for her work ethic and football IQ, Purchase’s role within the leadership group reflects both her influence and her ability to inspire those around her.
"Joining her is Violet McGennisken of Laharum, a promising talent from the Horsham District league.
"McGennisken’s athleticism and versatility make her an exciting prospect."
Ballinger said Scarlett Abbott, also of Laharum, added further firepower to the lineup.
"An agile and creative forward from Horsham, Abbott brings speed and goal sense.
"Completing the Wimmera representation is Abbey Wiedermann from North Ballarat via the Wimmera.
"Wiedermann's a dominant tall who is already generating significant attention.
"Regarded as one of the premier key-position players in the squad, she's expected to take on a starting ruck role, where her size, strength and developing skill set give her a clear edge in contests."
Ballinger said the inclusion of these players not only celebrated individual achievement but also underscored the strength of grassroots football across the Wimmera.
"Their selection serves as inspiration for the next generation of female football players coming through the WFNL female football competitions and reinforces the message that regional pathways can lead to elite opportunities," she said.
