Wipes block pipes, says GWM Water
GWMWater is reminding customers that wipes should never be flushed, as they are a leading cause of sewer blockages across our region.
Unlike toilet paper, disposable wipes are designed to stay strong when wet and do not break down in water.
When flushed, they can build up in toilets, private sewer pipes and the broader sewer network, causing blockages, sewage overflows and costly damage.
These avoidable issues can disrupt sewer services.
GWMWater is asking residents across the GWMWater service area to help protect their local sewer system by only flushing the three Ps – pee, poo and paper – and putting wipes and personal care items in the bin where they belong.
“We’re seeing a concerning increase in wipes being flushed across all of our towns, but the issue is particularly noticeable in Birchip, Donald, Great Western, Horsham, Lake Bolac, Murtoa, Rupanyup, Warracknabeal and Wycheproof,” said Mark Williams, Managing Director.
“Even wipes labelled as ‘flushable’ don’t break down like toilet paper.
"When they enter the sewer system, they can quickly build up, blocking pipes and pumps and increasing the risk of overflows and costly damage.”
Grampians Service Delivery - Water Service Operator, Andrew Bayles, said a simple change in household habits could make a big difference.
“We regularly respond to blockages caused by wipes and other items that don’t belong in the sewer,” Mr Bayles said.
“By doing the right thing at home, customers can help keep sewer services flowing smoothly and avoid unnecessary disruptions for their neighbours.”
