The awards recognise journalists who have sought to elevate the voices of children and families in a material and respectful way and are made in categories including Best Story about Children, Best Story about Young People, Best Story about Families, and Best Story about Children and Young People in Out of Home Care.

The awards considered all facets of media, including newspapers, online and radio.

The piece, which ran across all four Wimmera Mallee News newspapers and was written by Wimmera Mallee News journalist Zoey Andrews, was titled "Young survivor hits back, loud and clear".

In it, an 11-year-old domestic violence survivor spoke up with his message that he did not deserve to live in anxiety and fear.

Other finalists in the award for Best Story about Children included The Age journalist Natasha Bita and The Australian reporters Madeleine Heffernan and Wendy Tuohy.

It followed a four-week series, "Domestic Violence - Too Close To Home", being published across the WMN newspapers in May (Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month) and June sharing statistics and stories from domestic violence survivors and victims.

That series won an award recently at the Victorian Country Press Association presentations for Best Editorial Campaign.
