'Wombat crossing' funded for Nhill
Nhill's Macpherson Street and McDonald Street intersection is destined to have a raised pedestrian crossing, also known as a "wombat crossing", after Hindmarsh Shire Council secured funding for the project.

Jointly funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) under its Local Government Grant Program and Hindmarsh Shire Council on a 50:50 basis, the $125,000 project aims to provide a safe, priority crossing point for pedestrians.
The raised crossing will help to reduce vehicle speeds at the intersection and eliminate the need for pedestrians to wait for safe traffic gaps.
Shire mayor Ron Ismay welcomed the funding.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to improve the safety of our most vulnerable residents, particularly those accessing the nearby health service and aged care facility," Cr Ismay said.
"This project will give residents greater confidence when crossing a busy road while also reducing the risk and severity of potential collisions.”
The works will include the construction of a raised pedestrian crossing on Macpherson Street, kerb outstands on both sides of the crossing, drainage improvements, footpath construction, solar lighting above the crossing and associated line marking.
TAC is contributing $62,861 towards the total project cost.
Construction is expected to begin in the 2025–26 financial year.
