Youngsters selected for Western Waves
Horsham cricketers Hugh Weidemann (Rup/Minyip), Jobe Dickinson (West Wimmera), Harrison Hoffmann (Laharum) and Homers pair Luke Miller and Phoenix Hopper have been selected in the Western Waves under-16 representative cricket squad to play in the Victorian Country Cup.
The Western Waves play the Central Highlands, Northern Rivers, North East Knights, Mallee Murray Suns and Gippsland Pride between Sunday, December 8 and Wednesday, December 18.
It's a massive coup for Horsham Cricket, with the squad usually dominated by players from the more prominent regions.
Hugh Weidemann, an opening batsman and a handy bowler, is looking forward to the competition.
"I'm very happy. The standard and playing on the good grounds up in Albury is exciting," Weidemann said.
"Hopefully, I can score some runs and take some wickets, but I am not sure what role I will play yet, and I am looking forward to playing with the other boys as I know them well."
Jobe Dickinson, another opening batsman, is looking forward to it.
"It feels good, and I am glad I have a few other Horsham boys with me," Dickinson said.
"I am looking forward to seeing different grounds in Albury, and hopefully, I can make a few runs and have some fun."
Harrison Hoffmann is Laharum's wicket-keeper, and he said it's a privilege to be selected.
"I feel pretty privileged to make a team like that and being able to put myself on show for everyone," Hoffmann said.
"I will try to put my best foot forward, make the best of it, and give it my all against good cricketers. It's also good that I am great mates with the other boys, so I look forward to the experience."
Luke Miller, an all-rounder, is looking forward to the opportunity.
"It's a pretty cool accomplishment, and I am proud and happy. I am looking forward to the tournament," Miller said.
"Playing with my mates and high-level cricket is exciting, and it will be an eye opener to where you have to be at your cricket playing against different kids at this high level."
Phoenix Hopper, a middle-order batsman and handy bowler, also looks forward to playing with his mates and getting experience.
"I'm pleased with myself. I was nervous when teams were announced but was happy to see myself and my Horsham mates get in the team," Hopper said.
"We have played a fair bit of rep cricket for Horsham together, and it's nice for us to step up to the Waves and play at the next level up.
"It will be a good experience to see a high level of cricket and see where I'm at. Hopefully I can perform."
